Well... i got up this morning, poured myself a lovely bowl of coco pops (naughty but nice) and settled myself on the sofa to watch a bit of telly before heading off on an important mission to the lovely centre of Nottingham when i stumbled across an intriguing and quite unusual illustrator/fashion designer/story teller called Joanne Burke. She kind of creates these amazing embroidered costume dreamworld under the guise Chromium Dumb Belle.
"We wanted to be walking stories, all covered in metallic meanings and the embroidered imagery of all our favourite inspirations. We didnt think about anyone else or even care about current fashion. We just like to be in our own world all dressed up and talking about some old crazy lady we just discovered from the past or researching weird stuff and sharing it with eachother. Chromium Dumb Belle is a friendship thing too."
Although I'm not from a fashion background, this artist really captured my attention. She was just such a bizarre character, almost like a little thrift store imp who was intent on creating magical appliques and embroidery spells for only her own amusement. She talked of her vivid imagination and her love of story telling through her work it just kind of make me feel all inspired and excited.
I can appreciate that her style of working is so completely different from mine, but i was trained as an illustrator and have always been fascinated by the process of story telling. I'm starting to consider taking up the needle and thread and having a little experiment with textiles as a medium myself!
